What is Lymecycline?

Lymecycline, an oral antibiotic, is used to address moderate to severe acne and belongs to the tetracycline antibiotics family. It works by impeding the production of a vital protein that enables bacteria to reproduce and proliferate, lymecycline effectively eradicates bacteria responsible for skin infections and inflammations.

This acne treatment is typically recommended when conventional over-the-counter solutions have proven ineffective. Lymecycline has demonstrated its efficacy through before-and-after studies, making it a valuable option for adult acne treatment. (In the UK, around 5% of women and 1% of men continue to experience acne beyond the age of 25).

What is lymecycline used to treat?

Lymecycline, which is also available under the brand name Tetralysal, is a prescription-only medicine belonging to the group of tetracycline antibiotics. It is primarily used to treat acne. Acne is caused by bacteria on the skin's surface that feed on sebum produced by the sebaceous glands. The waste products of these bacteria can irritate the sebaceous glands, leading to infection and inflammation of the skin.

Lymecycline capsules effectively treat acne by eliminating the harmful bacteria responsible for the condition. The tetracycline antibiotics in lymecycline capsules work by inhibiting the reproduction of bacteria and reducing their population. This targeted approach addresses the root cause of acne rather than just alleviating its symptoms.

Who can and cannot use medicines containing lymecycline?

Lymecycline stands as a safe and effective remedy for acne, approved for use in individuals aged 12 and above.

However, it is not universally suitable, and you should inform your doctor if you:

  • have previously experienced an allergic reaction to any medication, including lymecycline

  • are currently pregnant or breastfeeding

  • exhibit liver or kidney problems

  • have been diagnosed with lupus or myasthenia gravis

Always ensure you notify your doctor if you're pregnant or may be pregnant, as lymecycline may impact the unborn child and potentially lead to liver issues. Similarly, breastfeeding mothers are advised against lymecycline use, as it can be transmitted through breast milk to the infant.
